I believe that one's personality is determined by a combination of their environment and their genes and that these causes interact with each other differently depending on the combinations.

For example, a naturally very sociable person could turn into a socially passive nerd due to being constantly rejected due to their over-friendliness being annoying.
Culture is boring - reject it.
Hobbies are interesting - indulge in them.
Be a nerd.
